At our GLW workshop we manufacture the large, structural steel columns that form the framework of many types of modern building. In the construction industry, structural steel is used for many types of plate, beam and angle, as well as the framework, or skeleton itself.
Structural steel beams provide crucial support to a building by resisting shear forces – including bending, breaking and collapsing that would otherwise threaten to pull large buildings apart.
Whether your project involves erecting new commercial buildings or warehouses, or extensions – such as loading canopies, we produce custom structural steelwork to an extremely high standard to meet your client’s specifications.
I-Beams
A building’s structural steel framework is composed of a web of horizontal beams and vertical columns. These are referred to as universal beams or columns, or as I-Beams, due to their distinctive capital ‘I’ shape when viewed in cross-section (they actually look more like a capital ‘H’ turned on its side).
There are two main types of structural steel I-beam:
- Rolled Steel Joists – fabricated from a single steel sheet through hot or cold rolling, or by extrusion.
- Plate Girders – fabricated from two or three steel plates, which are welded or riveted together.
Both fabrication methods have their place, depending on the size and load-bearing requirements of your steel framework. We will always recommend the most efficient and cost-effective method when you discuss your project parameters with us.
Flange Channels
Both types of I-beam have a greater depth than width, which improves their resistance to bending. An alternative is a Flange Channel, which has a wider vertical axis and two parallel flanges at the top and bottom of the joist (looking like a square bracket ‘[‘ on its side).
Structural steelwork from GLW Engineering
