Stainless is a term founded early in the development of these types of steels, originaly pinned against cutlery applications. It was soon adopted as a standard name for these types of steels which now covers a wide selection of different steel types and grades which are used for corrosion or oxidation resistant applications.
As stainless steel does not corrode, stain or rust with water like ordinary steel does. It is also called corrosion-resistant steel. Stainless steel’s resistance to corrosion and staining combined with its low maintenance properties and aesthetically pleasing lustre make it an ideal material for many applications.
Stainless steels are iron alloys with a minimum of 10.5% chromium. Other elements are added to enhance their structure and characteristics such as strength and cryogenic durability.
You will find that there are many different grades and surface finishes of stainless steel; each suiting the environment the it must endure. Stainless steel is commonly used where both the properties of steel and resistance to corrosion are a requirement.
